I’ve recently been treating myself to some DIY homemade lip and body scrubs to exfoliate my skin. I had a chat with a few friends and it sounded like DIY scrubs would be heaps of fun to make. They’ve turned out to be a great replacement for fancy scrubs and almost all the ingredients we already had in our own homes! So with the materials that we had at home and bought at the supermarket, we made a lemon and sea salt body scrub (left) and a brown sugar lip scrub (right). Our favourite part was the process itself and mixing ingredients that we would usually eat, into a treatment for our skin.

This is what we used to make the lemon body scrub (enough to fit into our jar)

  • 10 tablespoons of sea salt
  • 2 whole lemons
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

It turned out to be a vibrant color with an amazingly refreshing scent. This would be great to use in the morning to kick start the day!

Next up was the lip scrub! Here’s what we used

  • Brown sugar
  • Honey
  • Olive oil (to spread onto your lips afterwards as a moisturizer)

We mixed the brown sugar and honey together and let it soak into our lips for 5 minutes. Then we scrubbed them gently and washed them off with cool water. Afterwards, we dipped our finger in olive oil and coated it on our lips as a moisturizer.

The lip scrub was so incredibly sweet! I couldn’t resist licking my lips, but this made me feel a little queasy (it’s insanely sweet)! I’d love to make a few different types of scrubs and display them in little jars across my bathroom. I’d love to hear your recipes if you have any!

Finally, I used a hot glue gun to stick a ribbon around the perimeter of the lid and glued the beads on to make them look a little fancy!

  1. I’m definitely going to try this? Question: does it “expire”?

  2. I would think it would last a very long time. I give homemade goods the sniff test to be sure!

  3. exfoliating lips. that’s disgusting.
