Tips from celebrity makeup artists and Dermalogica
Father’s Day is approaching and it’s the perfect time of year to remind the men in your lives just how much you care… about their skin!
Skin health is just as important for men as it is for women, which is why we’ve compiled some guy-friendly grooming tips from top celebrity makeup artists, and Dermalogica’s Director of Global Education, Annet King. We’ve even included a few recommendations from some hilarious TV dads (and dedicated Dermalogica users).
Clean It Up
Celebrity makeup artist (and 15-year Dermalogica loyalist) Steven Aturo advises, “taking care of your skin does make a huge difference in the aging process, the appearance of fine lines, dryness, redness and overall skin texture.” The first step? Wash your face!
Annet King, Director of Global Education for Dermalogica, recommends using a deep-cleansing face scrub to lift up hairs and remove dead cells. “Massage it over your face, paying special attention to your beard area, nose and chin.” She suggests looking for scrubs with small particles of silica or corn cob meal, as they won’t over-stimulate the skin. Try Dermalogica’s Daily Clean Scrub.
After washing off that dulling surface debris, properly prep skin with a pre-shave product to soften tough hair and minimize razor burn and bumps. Try Dermalogica’s Pre-Shave Guard.
Another reason to clean and soften skin before shaving? According to TV and Broadway makeup artist Joel Mendenhall, “this will decrease the cuts or in grown hairs that shaving may cause.” Joel would know – he helps to groom the famous face of CNN’s silver fox, Anderson Cooper!
Smooth Shave
Next, apply your shaving cream and grab a new razor (hey, we’re celebrating! Go ahead and splurge.) Annet King recommends to shave with the grain – not against it – to prevent razor burn and cuts.
Pop quiz! Do you know the order of when to shave what parts of your face? Don’t worry if you’re at a loss – Annet knows all the tricks! Start with the sides of your cheeks, move to the neck, then chin and finally the upper lip, which has the toughest hair.
Try Dermalogica’s Soothing Shave Cream.
For a perfect travel skincare regimen, try Dermalogica’s Shave System Kit. This exclusive three-step regimen takes into account beard type, hair growth pattern and skin condition for a shave that delivers your healthiest skin possible – all in convenient travel sizes!
Feed Your Skin
Shaving can really take a toll on skin, so it’s important to replenish moisture and nutrients. A face mask is the perfect solution for men, as they can help soothe redness, pump up the skin with vitamins and antioxidants, and reduce wrinkles. Annet suggests trying a cooling gel or a creamy formula with vitamins. Try Dermalogica’s MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque.
After rinsing off the masque, apply an after-shave balm to soothe, calm and hydrate skin. Dermalogica’s Post-Shave Balm is a celebrity favorite, requested on the set of the Twilight movies!
And finally…
“Always use a moisturizer,” said Joel Mendenhall, “this will leave the skin softer and keep you looking younger.” (We totally trust him! Have you seen AC360 lately?!)
Plenty of other men turn to Dermalogica to perfect their skin for the small screen. The Modern Family TV dads Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet are all fans of the products. “The guys love the Antioxidant HydraMist, Special Cleansing Gel and Active Moist,” said Modern Family makeup artist Stephanie Massie. ‘Parenthood’ dad Dax Shepard is also a loyal user, favoring Active Moist, Skin Smoothing Cream, Antioxidant HydraMist and Power Rich.
