Does the Zaca Hangover Patch Really Work?

Hair of the dog?

You guys know how much I love beauty products and supplements, right? Well, the Zaca Hangover Patch is kind of both. It’s a supplement that you wear on your skin (like the birth control or nicotine patch) and it keeps you from looking and feeling like crap the day after some heavy partying (or in my case ANY partying).

You put the patch in an inconspicuous area (pelvis, back, arm, etc.) before you go out and leave it on for up to 24 hours. It’s water resistant and made with GRAS (generally recognized as safe), organic ingredients.

The anti-hangover ingredients in the patch are:

  • Prickly Pear – prevents dry mouth and nausea
  • Milk Thistle – helps your liver function properly
  • Vitamin B1 – B Vitamins are lost when your body is dehydrated or stressed
  • Vitamin B3
  • Vitamin B5
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid – antioxidant that breaks down free radicals that are produced when your liver breaks down alcohol
  • Taurine – may help reverse liver damage
  • Lycopene – antioxidant
  • NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) – an amino acid that helps break down free radicals
  • Magnesium – an electrolyte – helps with dehydration
  • Vitamin C – antioxidant

How much of the effect is placebo and how much of it is real? Well, that’s kind of impossible for me to say without a double-blind study. All I can say is, I really did see a difference and you should try it for yourself if you’re curious – start with the small pack and give it a go. It definitely didn’t leave me 100% hangover-free, but it was much better than NOT having the patch. So good, that I plan to buy more. (Note: I just bought 12 more patches – couldn’t even wait until I finished writing this review.)

It’s important to remember that you have to take the usual precautions when you drink. Drink at least one glass of water for every beverage (more if you can). Try not to drink on an empty stomach and eat something before you go to bed. Swig some water before bed too. Don’t forget to take off your makeup (I’m guilty of this most of the time…) and brush those teeth. One of the main hangover issues for me is allergies. I found that taking a Zyrtec during the day and a Benadryl right before bed helps a lot. Also, I have heard that a little hair of the dog (drinking a beer or small amount of liquor) the next day can help. It seems to help me. Part of a hangover is your body going through withdrawal from alcohol. I realize that’s definitely debatable, so remember – it’s just my opinion.

Also – I’m not a doctor, so take everything I just said with a large grain of salt. And, throw a bloody mary on that salt while you’re at it.
