The Secret to Creating Cruelty Free Curls

Kate Hudson's blonde curls

Women always want the hair they weren’t born with: if you’re straight, you want curly; if you’re curly, you want straight. I was born with a mess of blonde curls, and while I’m lucky to not have to spend those hours at the salon having my hair colored, the styling process is a whole different story. After years of hits and misses, I’ve transformed my natural hair hatred into a genuine love for the wavy locks my mom gave me.

The Product

If you were born with natural curls, these products will work wonders! While I like to preach the use of salt water to enhance curls (works like a charm!), I also am in love with John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Dream Curls Curl-Perfecting Spray. It’s alcohol-free which means it’s less likely to dry out your hair—this might be a nice break from the salt water spray every now and then. Another plus: I never feel sticky after using this product, and it makes my hair look shinier.

A Little Goes a Long Way

As far as application goes for any curl product, you don’t need to drench your hair in salt water to mimic your just-out-of-the-ocean look or over-spray your curls to create that bombshell hair mastered by your stylist. I flip my damp hair over, spritz a few times (probably six or seven sprays), and scrunch my hair into my palms. Scrunching damp hair forms natural waves and works the product deep into my roots.

Reduce Frizz

I know it might be tempting to skip the long wait for wet hair to dry on its own, especially when you’re a busy woman with a million things to do. Air drying is really the best way, but I know wet hair isn’t the most put-together look for day or night. If you have to speed up the process, use a diffuser on low heat for only a few minutes. I sometimes roll down my car windows and let the wind go at it. Refrain from touching your hair unless you have to, because this only adds to frizz! I usually use a spritz of hairspray and no more than a drop of body lotion the size of my pinky fingernail to smooth out any flyaways.

Keep Curls Hydrated

The rumors are true: warm weather, salt water, hot tools, and other styling products do dry out your hair. To keep my hair in optimum condition, I use John Frieda’s Rehydrate Moisture Binding Deep Conditioner about twice a week to keep my hair manageable and silky.

Glam It Up

If your hair is being less than cooperative, sometimes defining the curls a little more with a curling iron might help. I use a 1” curling iron to make my waves scream “va-va-voom” for a night out. The trick is to make sure you don’t curl your ends (about the last half inch of hair) to keep it looking natural and not reminiscent of high school prom.

After a while, these little tips become second nature in your hair-styling routine, and soon you’ll see that gorgeous, au-natural curls have never felt so effortless!
