Lisa’s Red Hot Tip:
Concealer can be used with your fingertips or a concealer brush. I like using a brush best and blending it in softly. A little goes a long way. Always apply the concealer to the darkest area under your eye and blend upwards. Sometimes I use a disposable sponge to gently blot away any excess. It can also be used on redness and sun damaged areas. I use concealer lightly after my foundation is set in place but it’s totally up to you.

I was HONORED to have my makeup done over the holidays by MAC Senior Makeup Artist, John Stapleton. First of all, John is an adorable former model and such a sweetie! He does Kelly Osbourne’s makeup for Fashion Police and has worked on many celebs. The girl who got him into the makeup biz? None other than Tarina Tarantino! John was nice enough to take time from his whirlwind schedule to let me interview him.

Q. What inspired you to start doing makeup professionally?

A. I worked as a model in Los Angeles and found that most of the time I would get used in a shot I’d have eye makeup on. It was the time of heroine chic and waif models, etc. So I’d go in the makeup trailer and ask for some kohl in my eye to make me look edgier. On one shoot I worked with a young MUA named Tarina Tarantino and she worked for MAC at the time. She was leaving her position at the Beverly Center store to start her jewelry business and I thought- I could do that job- so I applied. Sixteen years later and I’m still with MAC! And consequently collaborated on all of Tarina’s jewelry catalogues through the years.

Q. Who has been your favorite celebrity to work with?

A. There have been some really great moments. Jennifer Holiday was kind of a stand-out. She was performing at a benefit and wanted to be “painted”. Liza Minelli and Sharon Stone both stopped by to say hello in our trailer. It was hilarious! We used glitter, two sets of lashes, everything! She was so excited about how she looked. After the performance she came backstage to find me and had signed a CD with a personal message. It was so thoughtful.

Q. What are you favorite cruelty free makeup brands?

A. MAC of course! I also love Becca. They have a great tinted moisturizer. I’m also a fan of the eco friendly cruelty free nail lacquer line Sheswai. Also, Tarte. I do love that blush stick. I’m shocked that there is any animal testing anymore at all. I know most brands use in vitro skin cell tests these days.

Q. Any advice for makeup artists who want to get into TV and film?

A. Work hard. Work quickly. Be professional. Keep an immaculately clean kit. Be a good listener. Sanitize everything. People will watch you and appreciate you. Be you. They’re gonna find out who you are eventually. Just be yourself.
